Flash Designer and Actionscript Guru

As a designer who is also involved in motion graphics and programming languages, Craig Miranda (Miranda Design's principal designer) began using Macromedia Flash very early on. As a Flash Designer, he has designed and developed numerous Flash-only sites, HTML sites with embedded Flash animations and multiple standalone Flash animations for CD and DVD distribution.

Unlike many Flash Designers, Craig believes in practicing restraint when it comes to Flash projects. The key to good design is functionality. Flash is such a full featured animation and coding application — it's tempting for Flash Designers to try to utilize many aspect of the program for every project. Flash (and other interactive media types) should be used only in a manner that best suits the goal at hand. So we typically stay away from the spinning logos and "skip intros" unless these are in line with the communication strategy and the ultimate goals of the project.

Craig's knowledge of Actionscript 2.0 (Macromedia Flash's advanced scripting language) allows Miranda Design to efficiently and effectively create highly interactive Flash media. This includes motion graphics, games, demos, film-like ads, video, learning tools, interactive CDs — virtually anything imaginable.

Studio Approach to Flash Products

Our Flash design process begins is much like our HTML site design process. It begins with fully understanding our client and determining the specific need and message that we are communicating. We believe strongly that the literal message (words) and the underlying visual message (color palette, texture, graphics) must be in sync and must reach the target audience on all levels within the design; conscious and subliminal. Many decisions to buy or utilize a service are made more on the emotional level than the intellectual level and it is important to be fully in-tune with the messages being communicated on a deeper psychological level. Flash allows us to go one level further with the interactivity of the site or CD application.
